Zippo Tip

Here’s a useful tip for all smokers that use a Zippo lighter. Well, it’s probably something that every Zippo owner knew all along except for me and if that’s the case it’s simply because physics was never one of my strong subjects.

I’ve had a Zippo lighter now for coming up two years. This is sold as a ‘windproof’ lighter, guaranteed to fire up anywhere in just about any conditions. Unless I’m the one using it that is. For two years this bloody lighter has worked every time except when I am out. I walk the dogs across the local fields, the lighter wont work. Nothing made it work. I got a sore thumb trying. Yet as soon as I was home it would light up again. Every time. Didn’t even need wind or rain to stop it. It just wouldn’t work.

And it took me two years to figure it out. When I am at home, my cigarettes and lighter lay beside me on a coffee table. When I am in the car they sit in one of those little trays between the seats. But when I go out walking, I put them in the breast pocket of my jacket. The difference is that I always put the lighter in my breast pocket upright. I finally figured out that if I put it in the pocket upside down -- it works every time.

US Modular is at it again with their uniquely-named Monstor Drive Line (no that's not a typo). The micro-sized USB drives may look like little more than fashionable cigarette lighters, but the latest entry packs in an incredible 12GB of storage. The stainless steel shell is quite attractive, and it certainly helps that this device is "small enough to fit in the palm of a hand." As expected, the new Monstor Drive throws down USB 2.0, low power consumption, and 1500G shock resistance, but unlike other similar devices, the Monstor doesn't use flash memory, opting for a 4200rpm micro-HDD instead. Look for the 12GB drive to start shipping November 1st with an asking price of $129.

The Camel Zippos

Over the years many zippo lighters bearing the camel cigarette logo have been produced not only domestically here in the U.S. but also overseas. They have appeared in the Camel Cash Catalogues; they have been in conjunction with events such as the Camel Trophy Competition and the Camel Pool League; they have been sold in Shops around the world, notably many were offered through the RJR employee factory store.

In the late 1990's an attempt was made to catalogue them. The Brian Snipes Camel Guides appeared in which the zippos were not listed chronologically but numbered in the order of their discovery. The guides were subsequently taken up by Len Shorter who creates new issues of the guide as occassion warrants.

The purpose of this site is not to supplant the guides or be exhaustive in any way, but to show some of the wide range of zippos produced over the years by RJR to help advertise their cigarettes; it is designed to help the new collector to get a broad idea of the colorful world that he or she is getting into.

step 1 get the parts
you need some parts and tools
parts:

1. a zippo (you must make sure it is absolutely empty of fuel and vapor)
2. a usb thumb drive /flash cart
3. glue
4. things i cant remember

tools:

1. hacksaw
2. drill with drill bits
3. files

optional : (will make it much easier)
4. dremel with grinding bits



step 2 lets get into it

OK this is the easy part

prep the zippo for the usb drive

ok disassemble the zippo take the fluff out along with the spring thing that holds the flint

now put the zippo in your vice and cut the wheel part of the zippo off with the hack saw
and begin cleaning the cuts with your files or your dremel do a nice job with filing the metal down.

and for the love of hacking please be safe if you don't wear approved personal safety equipment (including safety glasses) while doing this you are a fool. I am not responsible for anything you do whether you set fire to yourself while grinding the metal (yes i have done this) or your pc, laptop, house, cat, girlfriend explodes as a result of making or using this. If you are stupid and kill yourself or any one else i DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT



step 3 drill out the flint holder

OK this is the not so easy part

Grab your drill and bits and find a bit the right size to drill out the flint holder once you have done this you should have a nice clean hole.



step 4 make that hole

ok now we got to make that hole bigger to fit the usb plug it to it.
now start another hole as close to the spring thing as you can because we want to still be able to click it as if it was real but still plug it in a computer so drill that hole out and and start fileing that hole in to the shape we want (the shape of a male usb plug)



step 5 mount that usb device :)

your gole's are in sight now
all you have to do now is glue that thumb drive in.



step 6 the finished product!!!

Zippo Lighters in American Films

A variety of Zippo lighters have been used in American films, notably several classics such as All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), The Usual Suspects (1995), Bad Boys (1995 film), Casablanca (1942), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Pulp Fiction (1994), and Goodfellas (1990). Several newer films include Shooter (2007 film), and Fight Club (film) (1999). Zippo lighters have additionally made appearances in literally hundreds of other films. The Zippo lighter's long history in American culture and classic appeal has made it thus a collector's item.
